Trump Compares Zelensky to 19th-Century Hoaxer P.T. Barnum

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has drawn a sharp and colorful comparison between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and P.T. Barnum — the notorious 19th-century circus impresario infamous for elaborate hoaxes and sensational publicity stunts.

Trump leveled the remarks on Tuesday, using them as a vehicle to assault his predecessor former President Joe Biden's track record on Ukraine — specifically his administration's policy of extending unconditional military assistance to Kyiv with no strings attached.

The broadside came via a post on Truth Social, where Trump also pushed back against circulating reports casting doubt on whether Washington possesses sufficient munitions capacity to sustain a prolonged military confrontation with Iran, asserting that US weapons stockpiles have "never been higher or better."

In his own words, Trump wrote: "Sleepy Joe Biden spent all of his time, and our Country's money, GIVING everything to P.T. Barnum (Zelenskyy!) of Ukraine – Hundreds of Billions of Dollars worth – And, while he gave so much of the super high end away (FREE!), he didn't bother to replace it. Fortunately, I rebuilt the military in my first term, and continue to do so."

The Barnum comparison is not the first time Trump has reached for a theatrical metaphor to characterize Zelensky — a former comedian, actor, and television producer turned wartime leader. Trump had previously bestowed upon him the title of "the greatest salesman on Earth," crediting him with a gift for persuading foreign governments to open their treasuries — one that, in Trump's telling, surpasses even Barnum's legendary talent for parting audiences from their money.

Barnum built his fame and fortune on a foundation of spectacle and deception — engineering elaborate hoaxes, fabricating advertising claims, and staging sensational stunts to draw crowds to his traveling circus and assorted exhibitions.

The insinuation carries particular weight given Russia's longstanding accusations against Zelensky and his inner circle, whom Moscow has repeatedly charged with seeding disinformation throughout Western media and deliberately obstructing or stalling the US-brokered peace negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
