Trump Blasts UK Over Refusal to Join War on Iran
Speaking to The Sun, Trump said Starmer has "not been helpful," expressing frustration over Britain's decision to stay out of the military operation.
"I never thought I'd see that. I never thought I'd see that from the UK," Trump said, adding: "It's very sad to see that the relationship is obviously not what it was."
Trump said he is "very disappointed" in Starmer for initially blocking Washington from utilizing the military base in Diego Garcia to conduct strikes against Iran — a move he described as unlike anything that had "happened between our countries before."
The standoff appeared to soften over the weekend when Starmer accepted the U.S. request to use the base for "specific and limited defensive purposes." However, Trump was unmoved, saying Starmer "took far too long" to reverse his position.
Facing parliament on Monday, Starmer defended Britain's posture, drawing a firm line between supporting defensive operations and joining offensive ones.
"President Trump has expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved in the initial strikes, but it is my duty to judge what is in Britain's national interest," he said.
