Lavrov Voices Support for Venezuela
The dialogue occurred on Saturday, shortly after US President Donald Trump declared that, following extensive military assaults on Venezuela, American elite forces had apprehended and removed the country’s head of state, Nicolas Maduro, from Venezuelan territory.
“Lavrov expressed firm solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of armed aggression,” the Foreign Ministry noted in a communiqué, emphasizing that Moscow intends to persist in supporting Venezuela’s stance of safeguarding its independence and national priorities.
Both Lavrov and Rodriguez “expressed their support for preventing further escalation and for finding a way out of the situation through dialogue,” according to the ministry. Additionally, both parties reaffirmed their dedication to advancing the Russia-Venezuela strategic cooperation accord.
In accordance with Venezuela’s Constitution, Rodriguez is next in line to assume leadership should the president be unable to fulfill his responsibilities.
Nevertheless, Trump underscored that the United States will play a role in determining who governs the resource-rich South American state.
“We can’t take a chance on letting somebody else run and just take over where [Maduro] left off,” he told a news agency in a phone interview on Saturday. “So we're making that decision now.”
