Gaza’s Health Ministry warns of intense drop in drug stocks
The warning came during a press conference at Al-Shifa Hospital in western Gaza City, aimed at highlighting the dire consequences of dwindling pharmaceutical, laboratory, and medical resources.
The ministry described the health system as being in “an unprecedented and dangerous state of exhaustion” after two years of conflict and a stringent blockade, which have drastically limited its capacity to provide essential diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Providing further details, the ministry stated that stocks of 321 essential medicines have been completely depleted in its warehouses. Shortages affecting emergency and intensive care services stand at 38%, potentially denying about 200,000 patients access to emergency treatment, 100,000 patients surgical care, and 700 patients intensive care.
Shortages in kidney treatment supplies have left 650 dialysis patients without access to treatment, with roughly 7,823 dialysis sessions required monthly. Oncology medications are in short supply by 70%, leaving around 1,000 cancer patients without treatment, and contributing to patient deaths.
The ministry noted that 62% of primary health care medicines are unavailable, and current supplies are far below what is required to treat more than 288,000 patients.
Officials warned that patients face significant health risks, including strokes and heart attacks, where no diagnostic or therapeutic interventions are possible, increasing the likelihood of preventable deaths. Cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgery have been completely halted due to a 100% shortage of necessary medicines and medical supplies, with any limited catheterization services reserved strictly for life-saving cases.
