Zelensky contradicts himself with seeking western support for elections
According to remarks attributed to the Kremlin, Zelensky has claimed he would not allow any external interference in Ukraine’s electoral process, while at the same time seeking active involvement from Western countries.
Zelensky’s presidential term expired more than a year ago. Elections were suspended after the escalation of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, with Kyiv citing the imposition of martial law. Earlier this month, Zelensky said he was ready to organize elections, but only if Ukraine’s Western partners provided security guarantees.
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow could consider halting long-range strikes on Ukraine on election day, on the condition that millions of Ukrainians living in Russia are allowed to participate in the vote.
On Friday, Zelensky said on X that he had discussed the issue with US officials and expects Washington to help impose a ceasefire in order to “ensure safe elections.”
Commenting on these remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “Zelensky is contradicting himself. He says that he would not let anyone interfere, would not let Putin interfere in the elections… yet he appealed to the Americans... So he does not object to interference by the Americans.”
Zelensky has also insisted that voting should take place only “by citizens of Ukraine who are within the country, on Ukrainian-controlled territory,” arguing that this would “ensure fair and transparent elections.” While he acknowledged that “there is also the practice of voting abroad,” he did not address the status of residents in Donbass, which Kyiv still considers its territory, or the millions of Ukrainians currently living in Russia.
