Media Says Macron ‘Betrayed’ Merz

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has been accused of having “betrayed” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz by refusing to support his initiative to seize Russian assets frozen in the EU to finance Ukraine, according to the Financial Times.

Earlier this week, EU leaders failed to reach consensus on the European Commission’s contentious plan to redirect Russia’s immobilized central bank reserves toward Kiev’s military and economic needs.

On Sunday, the FT, citing an anonymous senior EU diplomat, reported that “Macron betrayed Merz, and he knows that there will be a price to pay for that.” While Macron did not publicly oppose the so-called ‘reparations loan’ proposal, he allegedly questioned its legality in private.

His team also suggested that France, burdened with rising debt, would be unlikely to provide guarantees if the frozen assets had to be returned to Russia.

The FT claimed that Macron aligned with Belgium, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic in rejecting the plan, effectively “killing the idea.”

Instead, EU leaders approved an interest-free €90 billion ($105 billion) loan to Ukraine, backed by the bloc’s budget. Taxpayers across all EU member states will bear the cost, except for Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, which opted out.

Amid growing divisions within the bloc, “disunity between Merz and Macron” has become increasingly visible, according to the FT.
