Trump Names Jeff Landry as US Envoy to Greenland

(MENAFN) On Sunday, US President Donald Trump declared that Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, will serve as the United States’ special envoy to Greenland.

Landry acknowledges "how essential Greenland is" for American national security and will "strongly" promote the nation’s interests to safeguard its allies and the broader international community, Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

"Congratulations Jeff," he added.

Greenland, which has remained under Danish authority since 1953, has drawn Trump’s attention because of its strategic position and abundant mineral wealth.

Trump has previously characterized acquiring Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for US economic stability, likening the idea to a "large real estate deal."

Nevertheless, both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any suggestions of selling the territory, with the Danish government reaffirming its sovereignty over the island.
