US targets North Korea with new sanctions over cybercrime
"North Korean state-sponsored hackers steal and launder money to fund the regime’s nuclear weapons program,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John K. Hurley. He added that such actions “directly threaten U.S. and global security” and vowed that Washington would continue pursuing those who facilitate these schemes to block Pyongyang’s illicit revenue streams.
The State Department separately condemned North Korea-linked entities accused of aiding the country’s weapons of mass destruction and missile programs, which violate UN Security Council resolutions. “Today’s actions reaffirm our commitment to hold accountable those who target U.S. citizens and benefit the DPRK’s unlawful weapons programs,” it said.
