Meta Fixes AI Support Flaw That Enabled Instagram Account Takeovers
"This issue has been resolved and we are securing impacted accounts," a Meta representative said on the social media platform X on Tuesday.
According to reports, details of the vulnerability spread through Telegram groups before gaining wider attention on X. The flaw reportedly allowed attackers to seize accounts without requiring access to a user's email address or phone number.
Reports also indicated that an Instagram account linked to former US President Barack Obama’s White House page was among those compromised. The breach came to light on Sunday after unusual content appeared on the account.
As stated by reports, the exploit relied on the use of a virtual private network that enabled attackers to match a victim’s geographic location, helping them circumvent automated regional security measures.
The method allegedly involved initiating a password reset request, which opened a conversation with Meta’s AI Support Assistant. The tool, introduced globally earlier this year, was designed to streamline account recovery and provide automated technical assistance.
Meta said it has fixed the vulnerability and is taking steps to protect affected users.
